Brendan reflects on his best year in golf
Written by Bruce Young

brendan_with_alex As Brendan relaxed at his home in Canberra after arriving home from Japan yesterday, he reflected back on a year that has been his best ever in golf. "I think it was not only that I won three times in Japan and against some strong fields when I did win but that I was able to maintain a level of consistency that I have never before had in my game. I missed only one cut and when I did that was a narrow miss. I was very solid all year and then when I played well I contended."

"I feel I have had a better head on my shoulders this year and didn't get upset as much as I have in previous years. It has definitley been a better year mentally and perhaps some of that has to do with the arrival of Kieran which tends to bring things into perspective."

Brendan finished in third place on the Japan Golf Tour money list and won the Tsuruya Open, the Visa Taiheiyo and the Golf Nippon Series JT Cup in what he describes as his best season in professional golf.

Brendan is home to relax for a week before he heads to the MFS Australian Open at the Australian Golf Club in Sydney where he has an invite to play the event courtesy of Golf Australia. "I played a day for Callaway in Narita near Tokyo on Tuesday where they introduced their new driver and and I held a golf clinic for their guests then came home yesterday. It is great to be back home with my family even if the lawns are now out of control."

"After the Australian Open it we will head to the South Coast for Xmas with family and friends then at this stage I am a little unsure just what I might do early in the New Year before Japan starts up again. I have just received an invite by Callaway to the Dubai Desert Classic and the Indian Masters which are both European Tour events and am thinking seriously of taking up that opportunity. I have never been to India but have often thought I would like to do so and will give it some consideration over Xmas. There are also the two Nationwide Tour events down here which I may also consider but I will make those decisions over the next couple of weeks."

When asked if he had seen his long term coach and mentor Alex Mercer in recent times Brendan indicated that he had not but that he had phoned him just before he headed back to Japan for his last trip. "I was talking about life and the difficulties of being on the road and Alex, in his own way, reminded me of the great things in my life such as that I am financially secure through golf, that I am not exactly doing it tough and that we have a new baby in our lives. It is those sort of things that Alex is so good for. He is a great mentor to me and always has been."
